Pirate Software is back with its 16th Game Jam, set to launch on January 18th, 2025, and run through February 1st, 2025. This much-anticipated event has already garnered an impressive following, with 8,514 participants signed up on Itch.io. Game developers, hobbyists, and creative minds from around the world are eagerly counting down the days to this exciting challenge.

What is a Game Jam?

For the uninitiated, a Game Jam is a short, intensive event where participants team up—or go solo—to create a small game within a limited timeframe. Each Game Jam typically revolves around a specific theme, which challenges developers to think creatively and push their boundaries. It’s a perfect opportunity to test new ideas, refine skills, and collaborate with a passionate community of creators.

Pirate Software, known for its vibrant community and engaging events, hosts Game Jams twice a year, complete with enticing prizes for the winners. Whether you’re a seasoned developer or a complete beginner, Pirate Software’s Game Jams provide a supportive environment to dive into game development.

The Basics: What You Need to Know

  • Event Duration: January 18th – February 1st, 2025
  • Theme: To Be Announced
  • Participants: Open to individuals and teams of up to five members
  • Submission Requirements:
    • A Game Design Document (GDD) submitted as a Google Drive file
    • A working browser-based game prototype uploaded on Itch.io

Submission

Game Design Document

  • This is a planning document that details what your game will be.
  • This is a required part of your submission and a best practice so don’t forget it!
  • You MUST submit your GDD as a Google Drive file not a downloadable PDF
  • You can read a sample GDD here!

Prototype

  • This is a very limited working copy of your game.
  • Focus on playability over anything else.
  • If it doesn’t run, it won’t win.
  • Your Prototype MUST run as a browser upload here on itch.io.
  • The reason this is required is for ease of judging and reduction in malware.
  • Winners will be announced during the daily Dev Stream!

Steps to Get Started

  1. Join the Community: Connect with fellow participants on Pirate Software’s official Discord server.
  2. Form Teams or Go Solo: Choose your team members (max of five) or take on the challenge solo.

Rules of the Jam

  • Submissions must be original and created during the jam.
  • Teams are capped at five members.
  • No explicit, illegal, or inappropriate content is allowed.

The focus is on personal growth and creativity, so participants are encouraged to build their own assets and learn from the process.

How Are Entries Judged?

Entries will be evaluated across five categories:

  1. Playability: A game that runs smoothly and provides a polished experience.
  2. Theme Implementation: Clever and interesting integration of the theme.
  3. Cleverness: Unique mechanics, storytelling, or innovative ideas.
